Durham University Calls For Assistant Professor in Observational Astronomy
The Department of Physics at Durham University seeks to appoint a talented individual to the role of Assistant Professor in Observational Astronomy. The successful candidate will be a member of the Centre for Extragalactic Astronomy (CEA) and will have research experience that complements and strengthens the existing areas of research, including multi-wavelength and high-energy astrophysics, with the strong potential to exploit the next generation of astronomical observatories.
The successful applicant is expected to develop an original and independent research program, to publish world-class research with a focus on quality in high impact journals, to work collaboratively with others in the Department of Physics, and to have the potential to engage with industrial partners. They will also contribute to the development and delivery of high-quality research-led teaching that produces a world-class learning environment that enables undergraduate and postgraduate students to achieve their potential. The position will start around October 2020.
Candidates should have a PhD in Physics or Astronomy and an established record of research at the highest international level. They should also demonstrate the potential for teaching and postgraduate student supervision.
Apply To Participate In The Space Governance Innovation Contest
The Space Governance Innovation Contest is organized in partnership with Arizona State University’s Interplanetary Initiative Space Advisory Project, Space in Africa, the Lagos Court of Arbitration and the Outer Space Institute. For this contest, interdisciplinary teams of innovators will compete to address policy gaps in international space law. The sections below contain information about the background and requirements of the contest, criteria of assessment, and information on registration and submission portals. The submissions will be judged by an international panel of experts.
Prizes include cash prizes, international and virtual internships, publication opportunities and other rewards.
Contest Questions
Using international law, is it possible to bridge the policy gaps in the Outer Space Treaty (OST) to promote a sustainable and equitable new space economy? If so, what new instruments are required or how can existing instruments be optimized to address the new challenges raised by the new space economy? How can we responsibly innovate the future of space governance?
Contest Requirements
This contest requires participants to design an international policy and an instrument that would achieve the following:
- Establish what would be the common benefit for countries and private actors to pursue an in-space or space-oriented economy and its governing principles.
- Define investment (monetary and non-monetary) needed for your proposed tool or model.
- Examine the ways in which the stated investments needed can be organized or encouraged among existing systems. What stakeholders would be involved? What cooperation is needed to make your tool work?
- Determine specific provisions that would address the policy gap that you have chosen.
- Prepare the argumentation in support of policy position and provision.

The Zimbabwe National Geospatial and Space Agency(ZINGSA) was established in 2018 with a primary goal of promoting the development, adoption, and application of geospatial and space technologies for the socio-economic development of Zimbabwe.
As part of its human capacity development, ZINGSA is calling for suitably qualified persons to undergo a two and half year postgraduate scholarship training programme in Satellite Engineering at MSc and PhD levels from April 2020 to October 2022.
Eligibility
All applicants must:
- Have preferably a distinction in a Bachelor of Science degree or a Master of Science degree in Mechatronics, Aerospace Engineering, Systems Engineering, Electronic Engineering or a related science or engineering degree for the MSc and PhD Scholarships respectively.
- Be 35 years or below by April 2020.
- Have an understanding of spacecraft subsystems, satellite communication systems, spacecraft operations, and ground control systems.
- Have the ability and willingness to develop simulation/analysis software as needed to perform design/trade analyses
- Possess in-depth experience in using C#, Python, Java, or other programming/scripting languages to solve engineering problems.
- Possess excellent written and verbal communication skills.
- Be a citizen of Zimbabwe

Copernicus Master In Digital Earth Calls For Scholarships
Open data access has greatly enhanced the potential for realizing a range of societal benefits, the Erasmus Mundus funded Joint Master Programme addresses the associated capacity building needs on a graduate level. Therefore, the European Union Earth Observation Programme, Copernicus, has opened applications for Copernicus Master in Digital Earth till the 15th of January 2020.
The United Nations Office for Outer Space Affairs and the Government of Japan in cooperation with the Kyushu Institute of Technology (Kyutech) have established a United Nations/Japan Long-term Fellowship Programme on Nano-Satellite Technologies for nationals of developing countries or non-space-faring nations. The Programme will provide extensive research opportunities in nano-satellite systems through the use of the nano-satellite development and testing facilities available at Kyutech.
Every year this “Post-graduate study on Nano-Satellite Technologies (PNST)” Fellowship Programme will accept up to three students in the master’s course (2 years duration) and up to three students in the Doctorate course (3 years duration). Successful participants will be awarded a master or doctorate after successful thesis defence. The successful candidates will enrol in the Space Engineering International Course (SEIC) after passing an official entrance examination by the Graduate School of Kyushu Institute of Technology.
Application Requirement
Applicants should:
- Be nationals of developing countries or non-space-faring nations (countries without an established substantial capability to develop space technology/launch space objects);
- Be duly nominated by their institutions;
- Born on or after 2 April 1985;
- Should have the academic and professional background required by the specific fellowship programme. Candidates seeking a Master degree are expected to have completed studies ending with a Bachelor’s Degree or equivalent (4-year university degree) in engineering-related subjects. Candidates seeking a Doctorate degree are expected to have completed studies ending with a Master Degree or equivalent (5 years university degree) in engineering-related subjects. Degrees in different technological fields can be considered by the Doctor Commission; and
- Be able to make professional use of the experience gained in the fellowship programme.
