SARAO Calls for Applications for Doctoral Scholarships in 2020
The South African Radio Astronomy Observatory invites qualified students to apply for Doctoral Scholarships for 2020. The opportunity is open to academically excellent students who have completed or are completing a Masters degree in any science field that is related to SARAO focus areas for 2020.
Eligibility
The scholarship is open to citizens of South Africa, Botswana, Ghana, Kenya, Madagascar, Mauritius, Mozambique, Namibia, and Zambia, who wish to complete a relevant Doctoral degree at a South African university, or at any university in a SKA partner country in Africa.
Focus Areas for Doctoral Research
Science
This should be based on topics exploiting data projected to be available by 2020-21 from key existing radio astronomy instruments located in South Africa. These include MeerKAT, HERA, C-BASS, early versions of HIRAX, and HartRAO facilities (including astrometry and geodesy applications). Amongst these, MeerKAT is the highest priority area. Multi-wavelength projects with direct links to the above will be considered.
Engineering
Engineering topics should be directly related to the needs of building and operating radio telescopes that are supported or hosted by SARAO. Proposed projects must provide the student with skills that are critical to radio astronomy and geodesy, and proposals should explicitly list these skills.

SARAO Calls for Research Project Proposals for Postgraduate Research in 2020
The South African Radio Astronomy Observatory (SARAO)Â invites supervisors to submit project proposals for Postgraduate Research for 2020, in one or more of the following areas:
Science

32 Regional Positions Open at Southern African Development Community
The Southern African Development Community (SADC) is a regional economic community founded and maintained by countries in the Southern African sub-region. It aims to further socio-economic, political and security cooperation among its Member States and foster regional integration in order to achieve peace, stability and wealth. SADC currently has fifteen Member States, with a population of approximately 327 million people and a combined GDP of USD 600 billion as of 2016.
SADC Secretariat is currently recruiting in 32 positions to enhance its operations across its member states.
Tenure of appointment
All appointments for the 32 available positions will be on a fixed-term contract for a period of four (4) years, renewable once for an equal period subject to satisfactory performance, a retirement age limit of 60 years and the continued need for the position.
Eligibility
The positions are open to qualified applicants who:
- Are 50 years old or younger. This requirement is based on the Organisation’s need to recruit staff who can serve for a reasonable period of time before reaching the mandatory retirement age of 60 years.
- Are from the following eligible Member States: Angola, Democratic Republic of Congo, Madagascar, Mauritius, Mozambique, Seychelles, Tanzania, Zambia, and Zimbabwe.
- Citizens from all SADC Member States are eligible to apply for re-advertised positions.
Closing Date and Submission of Applications: Applications must be submitted to the SADC National Contact Point of the eligible Member States not later than Friday 26th July 2019

Apply for GMES &Africa and Copernicus Marine Earth Observation Training
The GMES & Africa and Copernicus Marine Earth Observation Training, with the theme “Earth Observation to services across the value chain”, is designed to support the development of GMES & Africa activities and Copernicus marine data use around the African continent.
The training will feature an online pre-course phase which will run from October 21 to November 8, 2019, which participants will be able to complete at their own pace. The course is open to applicants from any African nation who wish to use satellite data for research and/or operational marine applications. Candidates affiliated with any academic, commercial, or government organisation are encouraged to apply.
The workshop phase will take place at the Maru Maru Hotel in Zanzibar, Tanzania from November 12-20, 2019. The course will be limited to 20 participants; the workshop is fully funded and the costs of accommodation, meals, visas, and travel will be covered for all successful applicants. Selected participants will be expected to complete the online phase and attend the full duration of the workshop.
Applications will close on August 23, 2019, and successful applicants will be informed by September.

American Geophysical Union Calls for Abstracts for its 2019 Fall Meeting
The American Geophysical Union is now accepting abstracts for their 2019 Fall Meeting which is scheduled to take place from the 9th to 13th of December 2019 in San Francisco to inspire the future of science and beyond.
Fall Meeting is the largest international Earth and space science meeting in the world. After two dynamic meetings in New Orleans and Washington, D.C, this time it has returned to the Moscone Center in San Francisco to celebrate the past and inspire the future during its Centennial celebration.
Submissions are welcome from researchers and practitioners focusing on how Earth Observation data are being (or can be) used to address environmental and development challenges in Africa.

ICPAC is Recruiting to Fill Three Vacant Positions at the Climate Change Project
IGAD Climate Prediction and Application Centre (ICPAC) is hiring to fill three vacant positions for a climate change project to strengthen the Resilience of the IGAD region to the Adverse Impacts of Climate Change through effective Adaptation and Mitigation Actions (RICCAMA), a project supported under the Intra-ACP Global Climate Change Alliance Plus (GCCA+) Programme of the EU.
ICPAC is a specialised institution of the Intergovernmental Authority on Development (IGAD), mandated to perform climate monitoring and prediction to provide timely climate early warning information and supporting specific sector applications, to enable the region to cope with various risks associated with climate variability and change.
The three available positions are:
