The South African National Space Agency (SANSA) Space Operations has been awarded the International Organisation for Standardisation (ISO) 45001:2018.
SANSA Space Operations is one of the South African space agency directorates. SANSA said, last year, a strategic decision was taken to transit from ISO 18001:2007 to ISO 45001:2018 standards to align and integrate all governance processes and system elements within SANSA Space Operations.
The ISO 45001:2018 accreditation is for occupational health and safety (OH&S) management system. It enables organisations to provide safe and healthy workplaces by preventing work-related injury, ill-health and proactively improving their OH&S performance.
ISO 45001:2018 replaced the British Standard for OH&S, OHSAS 18001:2007. Although their principles are similar, ISO 45001 provides new improvements including, stronger leadership, better worker involvement and health focus, particularly mental health.
This is a timely accreditation for the SANSA directorate. OHSAS 18001 certified organisations were required to migrate to ISO 45001 by the end of March 2021. Or, if the coronavirus pandemic had disrupted their business, they could complete their migration by September 2021.
“ISO 45001:2018 was implemented to meet customer demands for reliable services offered by SANSA, by fully integrating and maximising the use of our unique set of assets at the facility”, said Nontobeko Gumede, SHEQ Manager at SANSA Space Operations.
The Managing Director of SANSA Space Operations, Raoul Hodges, said: “Our team has done very well in achieving this certification. By obtaining this accreditation, SANSA demonstrated tried and tested efficiency in all operational processes that ensure organizational sustainability, growth opportunities, and a competitive edge in these volatile markets.
This accreditation further strengthens the investor and customer confidence that SANSA delivers reliable services congruent to the international standards in line with SANSA mandate and strategic intent. We will continue to conduct continuous monitoring and testing of the business processes to maintain/improve the existing SSO standards for organization efficiency”.
