RSA and MINEMA Signs MoU to Mitigate the Impacts of Disaster Risks in Rwanda

On 21 April 2023, the Permanent Secretary of the Ministry in Charge of Emergency Management (MINEMA), Philippe Habinshuti and the Chief Executive Officer of Rwanda Space Agency (RSA) signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) to partner on improving the efficiencies of MINEMA staff and partners by utilising spatial insights and innovative solutions to combat and minimise the impacts of disaster risks in the country.

Furthermore, the MoU will advance collaborative efforts in areas such as disaster preparedness, response operations and recovery monitoring, spatial solutions in disaster management, early warning, hazard monitoring harnessing satellite image products, research and innovation and other areas depending on the circumstances.

Rwanda is susceptible to natural hazards, including landslides, floods, flash floods, droughts, and earthquakes. Over the last decade, the country has experienced an increased frequency of natural hazard-induced disasters. Thus, the alliance between MINEMA and RSA will significantly reduce environmental losses, propel socio-economic prosperity, and advance disaster management programmes in Rwanda.
