On 14 February 2023, the Director General of Nigeria’s National Space Research and Development Agency (NASRDA), Dr Halilu Shaba, and the President of the Egyptian National Research Institute of Astronomy and Geophysics (NRIAG), Prof Gad El-Qady signed a Memorandum of Understanding at the latter’s headquarters to enable both parties to pursue agendas that would bring development through astronomy and space science.

The MoU is expected to culminate in both parties bringing complementary resources, networks and expertise to advance development through astronomy. NRIAG has a long history of astronomical and geophysical observation since it was established in 1839 and would combine its comprehensive astronomical research with NARDAs’ to carry out research in astronomy and other related space science fields.

Dr Halilu expressed delight over the collaboration, saying NASRDA’s commitment to leveraging space technologies to enhance sustainable development in Nigeria is the reason for the MoU and that the Agency will put in place all that is needed for the practical realisation of mutual objectives, adding that the partnership will, no doubt, lead to the beginning of a robust relationship that will birth meaningful dividends for both countries.
