There is a saying that the African space race is not about interplanetary missions such as Moon missions or a Mars mission – the focus of the industry is to use space technologies to solve developmental problems in the continent. Space application tools such as Remote Sensing plays a key role in this and its impact cannot be over-emphasized. As remote sensing studies and research is becoming popular in Universities and research centers across Africa, there has been a significant growth in the number of companies and startup who are venturing into it.
A team of young researchers began investigating into academic remote sensing education across the globe with a focus on Nigeria and their finding were really interesting. This became evident in their paper which was recently published in the IEEE Geoscience and Remote Sensing Magazine.
“Analyzing various models and approaches should help in finding the best approach to education locally in a particularly promising field, starting from a global perspective. In this article, which is one of a series, we focus on Nigeria. We report our main findings about the current state and evolution over time of remote sensing in Nigerian universities, with a focus on identifying high-impact institutions and key drivers of educational and research productivity nationally.
With similar previous studies already being carried out at the global, European, and national Italian levels, this article brings the essential details from a country and region previously not considered into this study” – Excerpt from the paper.
The lead author of the paper is Oladimeji Mudele who is a Ph.D. candidate and doctoral researcher with the Department of Electrical, Computer, and Biomedical Engineering at the University of Pavia, Italy. Co-authors include: Chiemeka Nsofor, who is a senior scientific officer with the National Space Research and Development Agency, Abuja, Nigeria and Fabio Dell’Acqua, who is an associate professor with the Department of Electrical, Computer, and Biomedical Engineering at the University of Pavia, Italy.
