Algeria and South Africa sign a Space Memorandum of Understanding

A memorandum of understanding on cooperation in the fields of space science and technology was signed on 22 June 2018 between the Algerian Space Agency (ASAL) and South Africa (SANSA) at a ceremony organized at the International Center Vienna, on the sidelines of the work of the 61st session of the United Nations Committee on the Peaceful Uses of Outer Space (COPUOS).

This memorandum was signed by the Director General of the Algerian Space Agency (ASAL), Mr. Azzedine Oussedik, and the Director General of the South African Space Agency (SANSA), Mr. Valanathan MUNSAMI.

This agreement confirms the will of Algeria and South Africa to develop joint projects, including the creation of satellites and the establishment of a framework for exchange and cooperation in space research.

Under the MoU, the two agencies agreed to “promote cooperation in the fields of space science and technology, related applications and to work towards the establishment of the legal framework relating thereto between the two country in accordance with the principles of international law governing this area. “

The Director General of ASAL “recalled the fact that beyond the interest of this cooperation for Algeria and South Africa, it also serves the interests of the African continent in which both countries play a leadership role. “

The Director General of SANSA welcomed, for its part, “Algeria’s commitment to inter-African cooperation in all areas” and assured of “the availability of the South African side to join its efforts to those of Algeria with a view to benefiting the African continent from the benefits of space science and technology “.
